Vision for the Area Directors in 2026 - Join the Team!

As we prepare for our 2025 Annual Meeting and election of the 2026 Board, we are hard at work recruiting for the role of Area Director (AD). ADs are the area managers and representatives of gardeners. Each section has a number of ADs that help gardeners find resources, meet neighbors, get information, and ensure compliance of the plots within their sections.

The role of the ADs is highly impactful and rewarding. Area Directors strengthen the fabric of the Fenway Victory Gardens by ensuring every gardener feels informed, supported, and connected. Through weekly presence, thoughtful communication, and light-touch oversight, ADs help keep the gardens vibrant, welcoming, and well-cared-for throughout the season.

Whether you are a long-tenured gardener or new to the gardens, consider joining the fun. We aim to have a robust and diverse team of Area Directors in 2026 to support our fellow gardeners. Reach out to the nominating committee chair (Christine Nelson, christine@fenwayvictorygardens.org) if you are interested in joining.

About the Role

Area Directors (ADs) are the heart of the Fenway Victory Gardens’ community network. Each AD serves as a liaison between and amongst gardeners, providing direction, education, resources, and support across a small cluster of plots known as a “pod.” ADs help build community connections and serve as the first point of contact for questions and support. In collaboration with the FGS leadership team, the ADs ensure plots remain active and well-maintained and compliance matters in their area.

Time Commitment

This is a seasonal volunteer position (April–October) requiring approximately 2–4 hours per week. ADs should be regular fixtures in the gardens, present at least once a week during the main season, attend occasional meetings or trainings, and support at least one Community Participation Day (CPD).

Key Responsibilities

  1. Community Building & Communication

    • Send a warm introductory message to your pod at the start of the season.

    • Share bi-weekly updates provided by FGS leadership, customizing them with local notes and reminders.

    • Maintain open, individualized communication with gardeners—offering help, encouragement, and connection.

    • Facilitate introductions among neighboring gardeners to foster community and mutual support.

  2. On-the-Ground Support

    • Serve as a visible, friendly presence in your area and help orient new gardeners to key resources (compost, dumpster, water spigots, etc.).

    • Assist with identifying and educating about invasive plants, weeds, and stinging nettle.

    • Direct gardeners to the appropriate Section Coordinator or board member for further support when needed.

  3. Light-Touch Compliance

    • Observe overall garden and path conditions. When issues arise, reach out to gardeners in a constructive, supportive manner.

    • Log repeat or unresolved issues through the compliance form to maintain accurate records and trends.

  4. Event & Volunteer Support

    • Participate in community events, such as CPDs, helping with setup, coordination, and outreach.

    • Encourage pod members to volunteer and attend events.

  5. Reporting & Documentation

    • Share brief notes or concerns with your Section Coordinator within 48 hours of significant interactions or observations.

    • Contribute to broader understanding of garden health, member engagement, and emerging issues.

Qualifications

  • Friendly, reliable, and comfortable communicating with others by email and in person.

  • Basic digital communication skills (email, online forms).

  • Willingness to spend time in the gardens weekly and engage directly with fellow gardeners.

  • Strong sense of community and care for the collective garden environment.
